Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Mystery , Realistic Fiction / May 9, 2017

How far would you go to save your failing marriage? Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn starts off in a very odd manner. Nick, the main character, wakes up on the day of his and Amy’s wedding anniversary remembering when they looked for houses in Mississippi, and when he lost his job. He eventually ventured downstairs to find his wife, making breakfast. A little later he leaves to go to work at his bar named The Bar. When he comes back from work, he finds the living room destroyed and no sign of Amy. Her diary entries reveal their past and dark secrets as time goes on. The diary entries start when they first met, and end a week before their anniversary. As the entries go on, Amy’s fears start to surface as their marriage fails. The dual narration through Nick and Amy’s diary entries connects their growing problems in the past with their current situation. I did not like Gone Girl very much because it was very dark and far from reality. The storyline is mostly basic. The police think that Nick killed Amy, so they abandon all the other suspects, even though Nick claims he is innocent. This book jumps…

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
Dystopia / May 4, 2017

Pushing back the curtain on a possible and futuristic lack of feminism, Margaret Atwood has created a novel knit with fear, dread, and sadness: The Handmaid’s Tale. Through this dark literature, there is a toughness and a light: a human perseverance. The year is set some time in the future, though not necessarily terribly far in the future. Atwood alludes to a societal collapse, wherein women are stripped of their control and their rights, and men become the embodiment of power. There are camps where women can be shipped off to if they do not abide by these societal rules, where they are worked to death.  Outside the camps, each woman’s assignment is strictly observed and leaves no room for joy. Women in this time frame are categorized and placed in groups by specific uses in society. The Handmaids are young women whose goals are to be fertile. Each Handmaid is assigned to a home, where their job is to conceive and birth a baby for the Commander and his Wife. The Aunts care for the Handmaids and see to it that they are healthy enough to become pregnant, and the Marthas are house servants. These terrifying rules are enforced…

Trashed by Derf Backderf

Trashed is a graphic novel by Derf Backderf which talks about his experience as a garbage man. He goes in depth on how trashy of a job it is. Backderf has all these bad experiences like kids throwing apples and rotted food at him, and he has to deal with crazy people from the town who are totally unreasonable. People want him and his partner to take an entire old car in one day and get very angry when Backderf tells them what they can’t do, including hauling away cars, washing machines, and recycling materials.  After work, he get drinks with his buddies at the local bar to relax and clear his mind after an awful day at work and to forget about his horrible boss. He also has fun on the job. He goes to the graveyard and sees one of his friend’s, Magee, who is kind of goofy and just makes the job more easy going because of his attitude towards it. Also he gets to keep anything he wants if it’s left out, so he has fun finding some new furniture for himself. I would recommend this book for anyone because it is an easy read but…
